THE GROWING EDGE

"All around us worlds are dying and new worlds are being born; all around us life is dying and life is being born. The fruit ripens on the tree, the roots are silently at work in the darkness of the earth against a time when there shall be new leaves, fresh blossoms, green fruit.

Such is the growing edge!"

~Howard Thurman from "Meditations of the Heart"

This Sunday when you worship in our beautiful Sanctuary you will have a clear view of the sky, whatever the weather. Thanks to the sensitive design of our architect, Suzane Reatig, we will behold the manifold majesty of our Divine Architect.  We will also have a clear view of "our" tree that proudly stands in the foreground.  For much of the year it is a symbol of beauty and life.  However, you will notice this Sunday, there is not a leaf to be found on our tree.  It is stark and barren.

If one of the most under-rated spiritual writers of the 20th Century, Howard Thurman, looked at our tree he would remind us that there is more going on than meets the eye.  He would say "roots are silently at work in the darkness of the earth against a time when there shall be new leaves" calling us to hope. Through God's grace,  even the most barren places are places of hope.

This Sunday as part of MCCDC's Black History Month observance our worship will include a reflection from the writings of Howard Thurman.  Then, next Thursday (February 13) at 7pm Rev. Cathy Alexander and I will be facilitating a conversation on the life and teachings of Thurman.  In the 1950s his correspondence with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped clarify the courage of the great civil rights leader.

Thurman's teachings echo the teachings of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount, including this Sunday's scripture from Matthew 5:13-14 where Jesus says, "You are the salt of the earth. . .You are the light of the world."  My message this Sunday will offer ideas on living with a growing edge, even during barren times and barren places.  We may look at our tree. . .or at situations in our lives and ask "is there life there?"  The life of Jesus inspires us to respond with affirmation.

In preparation for Sunday, I invite you to join me in praying this prayer inspired by Howard Thurman:  "Gracious God, you create life. You also sustain life.  In ways deeper than our understanding, you bring life out of death.  In all situations, help us to live and lean towards the growing edge. Help us to say, 'Yes! There is life there!.' Amen."

See you Sunday at 9am and 11am.

Faithfully,

Rev J. Dwayne Johnson

PASTOR'S GROUP TO EXPLORE THE LIFE, WRITINGS, AND RELATIONSHIPS OF HOWARD THURMAN, THURSDAY, FEB. 13

In honor of Black History Month the Pastors discussion group will explore the life, writings and relationships of Howard Thurman. Howard Thurman, who was born on November 18, 1899 and died on April 10, 1981, was an influential African American author, philosopher, theologian, dynamic preacher, educator and civil rights leader. He was Dean of Chapel at Howard University and Boston University for more than two decades, and in 1944 helped found a multicultural church.

Thurman was a prolific author, writing 20 books of ethical and cultural criticism. The most famous of his works, Jesus and the Disinherited (1949), deeply influenced Martin Luther King, Jr. and other leaders, both black and white, of the modern Civil Rights Movement. He served as spiritual advisor and mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Please join us on Thursday, February 13 at 7PM in the Welcome Hall. Contact Rev Cathy for additional information at [email protected] or 202-638-7373.
